Mastering Your Health: A Guide to Physical, Emotional, Mental and Spiritual Health

Nour Fayad

Have you ever taken the time to consider what health is? Most people think it is all about the body. When they hear the word "health", the images that pop into their minds are of people working out, eating healthy food, or getting good results on medical exams.

But health is much more than that. We could highlight four main aspects of health: the physical, the emotional, the mental, and the spiritual.

The physical: I suppose you have a pretty good idea of what this one is about. It refers to everything that relates to our physical body: our brain, muscles, joints, skin, ligaments, blood, veins, organs, and so on. Usually, modern medicine around the world tends to focus mainly on this aspect of health.

Having healthy habits like exercising, sleeping properly, and eating healthy are the three main things we can do to maintain our physical health. Despite that, we should see specialists with a certain frequency to make sure there's nothing wrong.

The emotional: our ability to feel, our emotions, our neurochemistry, and therefore, the way we relate to others. Being emotionally healthy means that our emotions relate to the other parts of our being positively.

People who don't have emotional health get suffocated by their emotions, and that inhibits the functioning of their body, mind, and spirit. Learning how to express your emotions healthily can be a great challenge for some people. But it is necessary so we can live healthy lives.

The mental: the way we think, interpret, judge, our attitudes, the things we value, our beliefs and goals... this is what the mental aspect of health is about.

Mostly, when we talk about this aspect, we're talking about cognition. So, being cognitively active is essential when it comes to having a healthy mind. Studying, having serious conversations, learning to express your thoughts and emotions, problem-solving, developing new things, and so on, are ways of maintaining a healthy mind.

The spiritual: it's not so much about what we culturally understand as religion or spirituality. It's much more about the understandment that we are not disconnected from everything else. What path you will take to explore that is up to you.

A spiritually healthy person has the maturity to understand how they are related to everything else. With that comes the realization of one's purpose, a purpose that goes beyond their interests.

To develop your spiritual health engage in activities that bring you closer to your inner self. This can include reading spiritual books, meditation, and connect with nature.

Additionally, take some time for self-reflection and connect with your values and beliefs. Practicing mindfulness can also be beneficial for spiritual health as it helps to cultivate appreciation and gratitude

Now, you might have realized that it is pretty hard to draw the line that separates these different aspects of health. That is because they are deeply interconnected. Your body influences your emotions, which influences your mind, which influences your spirit. And this dynamic stays true in many different directions.

What is essential for you to understand is that we should broaden our vision when it comes to health. It is not limited to the body, it integrates our whole being. So, evaluate how you're doing in those different areas, and keep looking for knowledge that can help you to live a healthy life!
